Patients who received more frequent home hemodialysis in a skilled nursing setting were less likely to die or be hospitalized for cardiovascular reasons, a new study finds.
The study of 3,619 patients who received NxStage® System One™hemodialysis in a SNF between 2011 and 2015 compared it to patients receiving conventional hemodialysis in a SNF setting.
The data was developed in collaboration with Affiliated Dialysis Centers LLC and will be presented at American Society of Nephrology Kidney Week 2018 Annual Meeting on Friday.
“Because patients undergoing dialysis have a high burden of cardiovascular disease, a 23% reduction in cardiovascular-related hospitalization is very clinically meaningful,” said Maria Rosa Costanzo, Medical Director, Heart Failure Research, Advocate Heart Institute. “These findings are even more impressive in the high-risk population of patients who reside in skilled nursing facilities.”
Home hemodialysis in a SNF setting “eliminates the needs and risks of high-cost and disruptive transportation to and from dialysis clinics,” said Allan Collins, Chief Medical Officer at NxStage Medical.
